Worse Than We Thought

The five-into-eight squat down into a dense grove about fifty meters down the way, where the soot-covered remains of once-lively foliage form a gentle swirl of concealment around them.

Together the incredulous, confused group of youngsters rally in a circle with a squad of freaks.

“Right,” Bob starts, “I’m sure a man of your caliber noticed something off about the group.”

“They were insidiously accurate, and incredibly hard to hit,” The Captain notes.

“And not just one of them, but all of them,” Bob adds.

“Indeed. I suppose you’re mentioning this because you know why.”

“I do. They’re not in possession of one relic, but two.”

The Captain draws in attentively. “The Lyre Worm.”

Bob scoffs, sounding especially strange with his dense seafloor accent, something rarely heard in all but the deepest, scariest burgs of The Eversea; the kinds of places that are often the setting to human nightmares. “…Well, Captain, you’re not one to disappoint.”

“I’ll say,” Venus says, pressing against The Captain with a playful nudge. “That’s exactly what it is.”

The Captain nods. “I met someone with the worm once, but by that point their psyche was split so far they had completely forgotten who they were among the mess of different imprints.”

“How many?” Venus asks in a purely intellectual interest, though it doesn’t sound very different from the tone of a person picking up others at a bar.

The Captain nods his head a bit to the side while he looks up in recollection. “I counted about thirty four if I remember right.”

“Uh, hey,” Cole asks.

The Captain turns to Cole along with the others. “Mister Ketiere.”

“I have a lot of questions right now.”

“Can they wait?”

“…I mean, I don’t know.”

“If it’s about Dunklestein being hit in the head or you and your little arrow to the chest then I don’t want to hear it.”

“Actually, Cap, I’ve been wondering about that, too,” Dunklestein says. “I just kinda blanked out.”

“My sand has that effect on people at times,” The Captain says with a dismissive wave. “I don’t think this is the right time for this line of qu-”

“Okay, fine,” Cole says with a nod, taking a relaxing breath. “So I’m out of the loop with this. What’s this worm do?”

“It’s an exciting little lad,” The Captain says with a rare tone of weird interest. “You see, if inserted into the ocular tract of an individual, the Lyre Worm will begin using brainwave entrainment on any other semi-souled individual in the area with a close mental frequency. Through this entrainment, the victims become increasingly entrained to the will and thoughts of the worm-user, to the point that the group forms a neigh-flawless mental network, and can experience memories, thoughts, and sensory perceptions from the user and other victims.”

Dunklestein gives a mixed growl. “So basically it forms a cult around the one the worm’s feeding off of.”

The Captain nods. “A very ingenious survival tactic, however not one that will work on any of us.”

Cole squints. “But, I’m a human, right?”

“You are.”

“And… they are too, aren’t they?”

“I see where you’re going with this, and I’ll stop you there.
